Years ago I did a limited amount of silversmithing, enough to convince me to leave it to the Native Americans. I often travel to Navajo Country and buy handcrafted sterling silver and turquoise jewelry for resale. To the best of my knowledge the jewelry I refer to as Native American crafted is indeed crafted by Native Americans. My rule of thumb for jewelry made in this country was the stamp "Sterling" and for imported was "925". Now Native American looking jewelry is being made in part overseas and set with stones in this country and stamped "Sterling." So it is getting more difficult to tell real Native American crafted from the "Want-a-bes." Therefore, I'm listing Native American jewelry under the title "Southwestern Jewelry" and will disclose their hallmark where available.
In addition the imports are being sold by Native Americans along with their handcrafted jewelry. I attended a Pow Wow 2/08 where the vendors had to provide a Native American enrollment number. I was so disappointed to see lots of imported jewelry and dyed white Magnesite being sold as turquoise along with really beautiful Native American crafted jewelry.
